The Three Lions to Begin Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium

England’s men’s team will commence their 2028 European Championship journey at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they attain the anticipated qualification for a championship hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Ireland.

The Etihad Stadium has not hosted an English men’s fixture since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is almost certain to host the England side for their inaugural game on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at the Newcastle stadium. Placing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Competition Kickoff and Rally

The event was unveiled at an event in a London landmark on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the host football associations were confronted as they entered the site by approximately 50 protesters, who called for Israel’s national side to be kicked out from international football because of the situation in Gaza.

Banners were raised with slogans stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The inaugural fixture of the tournament will be played at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on June 9, 2028, a match that will feature the Welsh team if they secure a place.

Wembley Stadium will host both semi-finals and the final, which will be staged on Sunday 9 July with a kick-off time at late afternoon.

It is anticipated that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for UEFA Champions League finals from next season, will appeal to households and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.

Host Nations

The Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and Scotland would follow suit at Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the qualification process; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that do not reach Euro 2028 through the qualification path.

Stadiums and Playoffs

Villa Park and Spurs’ ground round out the event’s nine venues. All will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at each country’s national stadium.

The draw for the qualifiers will be staged in the Northern Irish capital, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“The event will be a competition for the fans and a showcase of everything we cherish about the sport – its emotion and power to foster unity.”

Over 3 million tickets, a record for a Euro tournament, are projected to be offered to fans.
