Republicans in the state of California have initiated a legal action in federal court on Wednesday, challenging a high-stakes redistricting measure that has the potential to flip up to five congressional seats to the benefit of Democrats.
The measure, Proposition 50, was approved by voters Tuesday night, representing a decisive victory for Democrats. The plan grants on a temporary basis the power to draw congressional districts to the state's legislative body, enabling it to adopt district maps that are expected to assist the Democratic party gain five congressional seats in the House of Representatives.
This action is a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, where GOP lawmakers, at the US president’s behest, have carved out a number of new safe Republican districts.
