Glasgow Warriors began their European journey in ideal fashion with a valuable bonus-point win on the road against Sale.
With the elements at their backs, the hosts started strongly and built a 14-0 lead within 20 minutes. Scores from the Sale skipper and youngster Ollie Davies gave them early control.
But, Glasgow responded admirably with a pair of scores before the interval. Forward Hiddleston and flanker Darge both crossed to reduce the gap.
Additional after the break scores from captain Kyle Steyn and centurion Stafford McDowall extended the Warriors' lead to 26-14. A late reply for the hosts set up a nervous finale, but the visitors held firm to secure a significant opening win.
Play began with a bang as Sale captain Ernst van Rhyn drove over from close range after only two minutes. An early injury to centre Rekeiti Ma'asi-White introduced 19-year-old Ollie Davies into the fray for his European debut.
The youngster made an instant impact. Switching to fly-half, he ran a smart angle to take an offload and touch down, making the home side's lead.
Against difficult conditions, Glasgow turned to their forward power to get back into the game. A powerful driving maul was finished by hooker Hiddleston. Prior to the break, Rory Darge forced his way over, with Adam Hastings' kick making it a two-point game at the interval.
Glasgow seized the advantage for the first occasion early in the restart. A misjudged kick was collected by No. 8 Dempsey, who set up skipper Steyn to break a challenge and race away to the line.
With in the driving seat, Glasgow clinched the bonus point when Stafford McDowall powered past a tackle to score his century for the club. This try capped a run of 26 unanswered points.
The hosts found a late hope when Louw showed neat footwork to cross. The conversion made it a five-point game with minutes remaining.
One last opportunity came for them from a throw in the 22, but they failed to secure the possession, sealing Glasgow's triumph.
Sale must bounce back ahead of a trip to face Clermont Auvergne this weekend. Meanwhile, Glasgow will host six-time winners Toulouse to their home ground.
Both sides are drawn in a strong Pool One that also features the English side and South African team the Sharks.
