‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from gurney to goals with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta played in England, an young appearing for Athletic Bilbao B against German opponents at the English ground in September 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against Sunderland following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, well, he did it once more. When he returned to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in that year, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Therefore the team did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I became very upset,” the forward says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the second half: I was without a signed my contract, I kept finding the net, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the usual talk. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”

La Real relieve strain with extraordinary derby triumph

At the facility, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; post-session, the short journey to Loiu and another flight to the UK, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Uttering the name lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for the team, partially owing to the demands of their participation. Beaten in added time in the local rivalry, they have managed just one win of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, prevented from reaching a domestic final by the English giants, and has traveled on a traditional boat through the waterway accompanied by a million fans after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Now he is Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are unique and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

The player believed it challenging enough just to break into the senior squad and his assessment was correct. Born to the former Real Sociedad player his father and a regular attendee at the opposition side, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the local academy that produced the coach, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He joined Athletic at seventeen but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he experienced a ACL injury, dropped, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to enjoy the highlights of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the UCL.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the senior squad but with every stage you progress through you’re remaining and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches at that level and my knee gave way.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the way I saw things. Healing from a serious ailment is challenging, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then go home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Strength training. If your hips aren’t balanced, work on that. With decent ankle function, improve it more. Every small aspect: perform them.

“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Extremely powerful. Seeing previous pictures: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Training finishes, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

You also have to play. He left upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the goals started to flow. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and when eventually they need someone where you play, they might come back for you. Preparation is key. When the opportunity came, it was a dream come true. Lifting the cup, European football, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
