In a significant move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have signed infielder Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
The contract includes a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the farm system without his permission and grants him a free agent at the end of the term. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered performance bonuses.
Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth-ever Japanese-born to play for the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
Murakami, a lefty bat who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a promising group of offensive players in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a last-place season, placing at the bottom in the division but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Central League MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is famous for a record-breaking 2022 season where he launched 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's prestigious Triple Crown.
His last year was curtailed to a partial schedule due to an muscle issue. Even with recording often, he still managed .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.
Over his eight-year tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 strikeouts in 892 contests. Initially playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.
Murakami's clutch hitting were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a equalizing home run in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's subsequent title triumph.
The power hitter is slated to be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday.
